What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is an ancient science focused on holistic, whole-body healing and the belief that health and wellness depend on a balance between body, mind and spirit. Ayurveda originated in Kerala, India around 5000 BC and is known as the sister science to yoga. In Sanskrit, "ayur" means life, "veda" means science, translating to "the science of life" or "the knowledge of life."
As a science of self-healing, Ayurveda includes general lifestyle guidelines including diet and nutrition, exercise, rest and relaxation, meditation, pranayamas (breathing exercises) and specific herbs and spices to rebalance the mind, body, and spirit.
The goal of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of a healthy person and prevent dis-eases. Ayurveda views each individual as unique, thus needing different foods, environments, exercise, etc. to stay balanced.
